Island Houses I

The shape of the shoreline here gives this site the qualities of a corner lot. The plan is laid out to take advantage of the splayed views it affords. The house is organized around three courtyards- a large entry courtyard behind the main wing of the house; an upper lawn for outlying bedrooms, and a lower pool terrace. The large courtyard is further divided into an entry court and a lawn. There is a small courtyard around which three more proximate guest bedrooms pinwheel.

Upon approaching the house you are presented with a gate house with a long wall and an arched gate. The drive delivers guests right

to the entry garden and the front door of the main house. The public rooms of the house flank the open entry hall that has views to the water. The living room is to the right, the library and dining room to the left, with the kitchen and services trailing behind in a separate wing that is close but out of site from the gardens. The master bedroom and a guest bedroom are stacked at the far end of the main house, the master opening onto the pool garden. Three guest bedrooms form a smaller garden in the middle of the plan, their baths and bedrooms carefully arranged to give them privacy, and views in four directions. Site elements throughout the gardens integrate the house and the landscaped terraces.
